Gravity Waves in a Dissipating Storm

Gravity Waves in a Dissipating Storm

As a storm chaser, it is almost never encouraging to see gravity waves near a storm since this strongly suggests that the layer is which they are propagating is quite stable. As the elevated storm in the previous image approached, the updraft began to collapse and the precipitation core accordingly began to dissipate. As the final nail in this storm's coffin, gravity waves became visible in the remains of the updraft base. Taken north of Sutherland, Nebraska, June 16, 2013.
